Declining Trust In Our Government :: essays research papers

Declining Trust in Our GovernmentIs the American peoples invest in our government declining? According to roughly people, it definitely is. Recent polls make this argument very valid. In1995, the Princeton Survey Research Associates conducted a telephone interviewof 1514 random sample adults. In this interview, people were asked how much ofthe time they trusted in the federal government to do the remediate thing. Twenty-one percent said most of the time and 71 percent said only some of thetime. When asked the same question of their state governments, the resultswere only slightly better. Thirty percent said most of the time and 62percent said only some of the time ("Why Dont"). This indicates that amajority of the American people believe that the American government is notdoing the right thing in a lot of the actions it takes. Of course, nobodyexpects the government to operate perfectly with no mistakes, because this isnot a perfect world. These numbers are excessively high though. What caused thisproblem in the United States, what is the extend of this problem in our country, and is this distrust of our government even a serious problem at completely? These arethree questions that need to be addressed in out society today. What really has caused the American people to distrust our government andwhen did this trend actually begin? I do not believe there is any clear answerto these questions and I do not believe it would ever be possible to pinpointany exact reason for the feelings of the American people. One reason cited bysome is that it is the fault of poor leaders. Two commonly damn leaders arePresident Johnson and President Nixon. Two of the biggest drops in the publicsconfidence in our government occurred in 1964, during the bombing of Vietnam, and in 1972, during Watergate (Nye). Although these two events may shake offcontributed to the distrust of the American government, I do not believe thattwo events and two leaders can be held totally responsible. For one thing, these things occurred over twenty years ago, why is there still distrust today. Not only does this distrust still exist, but many would say that it hasincreased greatly since then. I do not thing that two leaders can be pinpointedand blamed for destroying the trust in our government. Perhaps though the blamecould be pose on American political leaders in general. In a 1995 poll, thirty-five percent said the main reason that they do not trust the federal government

Satie, Erik :: essays research papers

Satie, ErikThe French composer Erik Satie was born on May 17, 1866, and died onJuly 1, 1925, was the son of an English mother and a Parisian music publisher. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1879 but failed to benefit fromacademic education, which he embarked on again only in his 40th year, when heenrolled as a pupil of Vincent dIndy and Albert Roussel at the Schola Cantorum.Long before that, however, he had composed a number of short piano pieces, whoseeccentric titles and unfashionable and as yet convincing simplicity of melody werematched by an individual sense of harmony. It is still a moot point whetherSatie got his harmonic ideas from his fellow student and friend Claude Debussy,or whether the debt was on Debussys side. It is quite clear, however, thatSaties tasteful principles influenced Debussy in the composition of his operaPelleas et Melisande and that Satie was the main influence in helping Debussy tofree himself from the musical domination of Richard Wagner. Satie be cameinterested in plainsong through his association brainh a so-called Rosicruciangroup, while he earned his living as a cafe pianist in Montmartre.Satie was a conscious eccentric and a determined enemy of allestablishments, including the musical. The comical titles that he attached tohis small piano pieces are characteristic of the Bohemian wit in the Paris ofhis day. Irony and a deceptively childlike attitude, a dislike for pomposity ofall kinds, and an instinctive secretiveness were hallmarks of both the man andhis music. In 1916, Satie was befriended by Jean Cocteau and wrote the musicfor a ballet, Parade, on which Pablo Picasso and Leonid Massine alsocollaborated. By far the most important of Saties works is Socrate , an harsh

The Evolution of the American Television Family Essay examples -- essa

The Evolution of the American Television Family Television is not just a form of entertainment, but it is an excellent form of study of conjunctions view concerning its families. This study foc delectations on the history of television receiver beginning in the early 1950s and will run through present day. It examines the use of racial, ethnical and sexual stereotypes to characterize the players of these shows. The examples assist in tracing what has happened to the depiction of the American family on prime time television. It reveals the change of the standards employed by interlocking television as disclosed to the American public. Finally, I will propose the question of which is the influential entity, television or the viewing audience. The Goldbergs, which was originally a radiocommunication show, became the first popular family series. It became a weekly TV series in 1949, revealing to Americans a working class Jewish family who resided in a teensy-weensy apartment in t he Bronx. The show, while warm and humorous, confronted delicate social issues, such as sensitivity due to the Second World War. It is an excellent example of an ethnic familys status in society. A classic among classics, I Love Lucy appeared on television on October 15, 1951, (http//www.nick-at-nite.com/tvretro/shows/ilovelucy/index.tin). The series premise focused on the antics of a nonsensical wife who beguiles her easily angered husband. The series created the men-versus-women standard on television, (such as what we see between Dan and Roseanne on Roseanne today), that still predominates today. One circumstance that guide TV executives to seriously challenge the shows impending success was the use of Lucille Balls real-life Cuban husband, Desi Arnaz. The mixed-marriage status was a questionable notion that worried the administrators. The bureau prevailed its episodes routinely attracted over two-thirds of the television audience. Leave it to Beaver, the definitive 1950 s household comedy, focused on life through the eyes of an childish boy, Beaver. Beaver was a typically disorderly youngster. His brother Wally, just entering his teens, was beginning to discover the opposite sex. The relationship that existed between the boys and their parents, Ward and June, was impeccable. A situation never developed that damaged the kinship beyond restoration. The parents exhibited perfect attributes that no ... ..., the idea of the American family is much more realistic than that of those shows from the 1950s. The familys obnoxious mother is the most dynamic member of the family. Married with Children was an overly exaggerated example of a problematic family. While it was a far cry from reality, the show verbalised the societys opinion of its own culture in a satirical fashion. Televisions portrayal of the American family has undergone a significant sack in the fifty years of its existence, as stated by this essay. The families seen on television toda y are the diametric opposite of those seen in the early 1950s. The relationship between the parents and the children has gone from perfect to dysfunctional. But, it is the dysfunctional relationships that are better examples of American families. Racial and ethnic lines have been crossed in the fifty years of televisions existence. If anything, television families have been teachers, showing the viewing audiences how to act and how things truly are. Blind folds, previously worn by the American people, have been taken come to and thrown away. It is societys greater appreciation for honesty that has greatly influenced television.

Baroque Art

Challenge II fancy finesse What is it and why do we care about it? The Baroque is often purview of as a period of artistic modal value that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, and music. The style began around 1600 in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. Its defined as a style of European architecture, music, and art of the 17th and 18th centuries that followed mannerism and is characterized by ornate detail. In architecture the period is exemplified by the palace of Versailles and by the work of Bernie in Italy. Major composers include Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel Carving and Rueben are important baroqueness artists. (Being Dictionary) However, the word baroque seems to have a slight negative connotation-the original translations of this word include Italian for tortuous medieval pedantry and Portuguese for deformed pearl. In other accounts, Baroque is associated with strange, bizarre, and spectacle. This is probably because of the art side of the baroque period controversial artists such as Peter Paul Rueben captured voluptuous women on canvas in The loot of Lucrative and The Rape of the Daughters of Leucosis, and Giant Lorenz Bernie in The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. So why is all this this important to us? Well, despite being a sec provoking and over-extravagant, the baroque period was withal beneficial. In addition to producing the earliest European music familiar to most of us, including Bachelors Canon and Vivaldi The Four Seasons, the baroque era also greatly expanded our horizons. The acceptance of Copernicus 16th century theory that the planets didnt evolve around the earth made the universe a much larger place, plot of land Galileo work helped us get better acquainted with the cosmos. The philosophical aspect of the baroque makes it important and the vestiges of the era are still heard today in music- some of the most influential a nd beloved compositions are regularly performed in concert halls, and snippets of Bach and Vivaldi frequently appear in the solos of heavy metal guitarists. Having capacious since shed its derogatory connotations, baroque is now simply a convenient catch-all for one of the richest and most diverse periods in music and art history. Consumerism and the Environment Essay

Consumerism is a concept that was created before the Great Depression, which, by definition, operator the concept that an ever-expanding wasting disease of goods is advantageous to the economy the fact or practice of an increasing consumption of goods. In other words, consumerism has meant the transformation of citizens into shoppers. In fact, after the calamity of 9/11, we were not asked to sacrifice or work hard in order to defeat terrorism, we were asked to go shopping. (Barber, 2008) Buying more products may help the economy provided it is not good for the purlieu.Statistics show that the act of consumerism has negatively affected the surround and made a sustainable future very difficult. With the threat of overpopulation and the increase consumption of food and natural resources, our environment may not be able to sustain future generations. In looking at the statistics of consumption in the States over the years, we flip doubled or tripled our consumption of food and nat ural resources in the last 50 years. One of the root causes of our environmental problems is hyper-consumption.We manifestly buy too much of what we dont need and often even what we really dont want. According to Globalissues. org half of the existence lives on less that $2 a day and WorldWatch. org or World Watch Institute states 12% of the worlds population lives in North America and Western Europe and accounts for 60% of private consumption spending. The statistics of consumption in America is disturbing. Putting the consumption of food aside, global oil output is currently about 81 million barrels a day and is predicted to fall to 39 million barrels a day by 2030 due(p) to diminishing resources. Seager, 2007)In 50 years and as these resources doubled in consumption, carbon dioxide levels increased over 20%, which is very harmful to our environment and the ozone. The worlds population needs to realize that consumerism is affecting the environment in very bad tracks and peopl e need to start changing the way they live and buy in order to help save the environment. The effect of consumerism to the environment has been well documented over the years. From fuel consumption to polluted air, a damaged ozone and massive waste and garbage dumped, our environment has taken a lot of hits. The increase of natural fuel over the last few decades has legion(predicate) people wondering what the world will do if we run out. The answer is simple. We need to transform the way we use fuel into re-usable, environmentally friendly fuel. That is easier tell than done, but massive modify is never easy. We to a fault have to look at what damage this consumption is doing to the air and the ozone layer. The effect of ozone layer depletion often seems as if it is a far away problem. In reality, the weakening of the domains fosterion from radiation has implications that spread across the planet. The Environmental issues caused by ozone layer depletion will ultimately affect eve ryone. (Ozone Layer Depletion, 2012) According to statistics, the holes in the ozone layer be getting bigger year by year. There may not be a way to reverse the damage that has been done, but we can prevent more damage just by making simple changes. The US produces approximately 230 million tons of trash per year and less than one fourth of it is cycled and the remaining garbage is burned. If we put a proper plan in place, we could recycle 70% of this waste and dramatically devolve the demand virgin resources. There are several environmental agencies that actively seek to make a change for the better. There is no one person or group able to make decisions that are binding upon all or even most of the participants in a movement. This makes negotiation and settlement difficult, if not impossible. Getting more people involved in environmental activism does not mean they need or have to picket or protest environmentally unfriendly businesses, just to be aware and work on their own co nsumption. (Arquilla & Ronfeldt, 2001)With the massive increase in consumption and the negative effect on the environment, the American presidential term and corporations are putting plans into place to protect our environment. For example, according to thewhitehouse. gov, The Obama Administration is committed to protecting the air we breathe, water system we drink, and the land that supports and sustains us. The Recover Act Investments in our Environment is finding for programs and projects that will protect the environment. The National Ocean Policy helps preserve our oceans. The government is also working to reduce air pollution by setting ambitious new fuel economy standards for cars and trucks that will raise the miles per gallon usage and decrease carbon emissions. The government has also proposed national standards for mercury, arsenic and other toxic air pollution from power plants. There is also the proposal for the development of calorie-free energy, which, should slow do wn if not stop the usage of natural fuel and also have a positive effect on the environment. None of these proposals or policies has been put into place as of yet, but it is good to know that the government is at least working on a solution. Not only is the government working on a solution but also several of the leading corporations in America have gone green to help protect our environment. Companies like Bank of America, McDonalds, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and many others have decided to look at the big picture and give our environment a little help. close of these big companies were big environmentally unfriendly companies and either chose to go green or had to go green because of falling profits. They had to go green because when the public got uprise of the waste the companys business suffered quite a bit. There are several things that we, as a nation, can do to help our environment and to ensure that we have a sustainable future. First thing that we need to do is to try and reve rse as much damage that has been done to our environment as possible. In order to do that, some major changes have to be made. According to science. howstuffworks. com, doing the following things could help the environment in tremendous ways Leave your car at home at least 2 days a week it could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an comely of 1,590 pounds per year.Recycle all paper and plastic. If an office building of 7,000 workers recycled all of its office paper waste for a year, it would be like taking about four hundred cars off the road. Compost your waste. Composting will reduce the amount of waste that is put into landfills or burned and polluting the air. With regards to preserving sustainable resources, that problem is a little tougher to solve. Fossil fuels are a finite resource, which means it has a limit and when it is gone there is no replacing it.We have to find environmentally friendly fuels to replace fossil fuels. We also have to be careful with our food, water, and soil. Several studies have shown that even if rely on renewable resources like rainwater, we have to make sure that pasture of consumption does not exceed how much can be produced. We have the knowledge to help save and sustain our environment and population. Ever since the inception of Earth Day in 1970, activists have lobbied to get governments, corporations, and regular people to see the damage that is being done to our environment. These activists are and have been working ever watchfully to get the word out that the environment is in trouble. We are seeing it now with the holes in the ozone and the depletion of the natural resources. Our society has been built on consumption and the radical that more is better. In order to reverse this way of thinking we have to change the way we do things. It is a long and hard process but if everyone, including governments and corporations, would do their small part we will have a more sustained and healthy environment.

Human †Meaning of life Essay

?I really have to give credit for my religion & beliefs for my search on the importee of life. Im a fully baptized Catholic, and a part of paragons Church. 17 years of being a Catholic and in search of the meaning of life, I have always thought it is some the Call to Holiness. My religion taught me that being a part of Gods Church is no accident, but because God wanted to share in His own blessed life, and in doing so He wanted me to desire & serve Him freely by following His will. And by following his will, God will grant me eternal happiness which will lead to my salvation. All Catholics knew that God sent His son, Jesus, to set an example for us. Jesus showed the spotless example & answered the call to Holiness. He showed us that we should love our neighbors as God showed His love for us and that is what the Call to Holiness is. In search for the true meaning of life, it will admit plenty of years, but for now I plan to stick with what my religion has taught me. Carl Rogers Car l Rogers emphasized & focused on self-actualization. He believed that a soulfulness should develop his/her potential to the fullest, and in good condition. In doing so, the environment of a person should be inherently good. A person will only bump developing if constraints block the development. A fully developed person shows that he/she achieved the highest level of being a right & fully-functioning human being. Mahatma Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi, which means great soul, was an ideologue during the Independent movement of India from the British. As an ideological leader he believed violence should never be an answer to fight for his peoples rights, and should never take discrimination. He also believed that harmony, truth & equality exists between all religions. With these 2 influential personas, I have noticed similarities between them. They both talk about human beings having a common good inside of them. They emphasized that all humans were born good, but because of destructive envi ronment, they tend to turn their backs on what is right. Compare or Contrast

The City I Love Traveling is one of my favorite activities in life. But the sad truth is that I have only been to one other place besides my home town Miami, Florida. My first adventure was to a small town in North Carolina called self-direction. Compared to Miami, there were many characteristics I was non familiarized with and were new to me. Among the many alterations the weather, the multitude, and the lifestyle were the ones that caught my attention the most, causing me to realize in effect(p) how often I need to appreciate Miami. For starters, the weather in conversancy is completely opposite from what we are used to in Miami. Instead of walking outside excrete from head to toe and becoming completely sticky from the humidity, they experience what is known as dry heat. But besides that, the temperature in addition affects the seasons. For example, in fall, the leaves on the trees approach going to change colors and fall off their branches. Its quite a sad situation beca use the leaves are drying out, but its one of the many beautiful scenes my eyes could capture. In winter, temperatures demean to freezing level and snow starts to come around. People have to wear tons of jackets and sweaters to stay warm. Unlike Miami, the weather is almost always on the corresponding temperature dial, hot. rase in the fall, it still feels like it is summer. People go to the beaches, but never get in since water temperature may be cold because of the naval currents. In winter, temperatures start to drop, but never to a freezing point unless a strong cold front passes by. Quite frankly, I love it in Miami because the weather is always perfect for many activities. Its really hard to leave a beautiful place like this. The people in Liberty also caught me by surprise. I expected them to be down to earth and friendly, but I was wrong The majority of the population included plenty of whites and Mexicans. The whites though, were rattling racist against African Americans , Latinos, and Mexicans. Their attitudes include nothing of humility because they believe to be the best among all. They were really disrespectful and always looked at others as if they were an alien. In Miami, there is a variety of different people, but mostly Latinos take more than half of the population. I could truly say I feel accepted, because everyone down here usually gets along and typically treat one another equally. Most importantly the color of a human skin or of a family background does not keep you from macrocosm treated with respect, and that is one quality I would refuse to lose hold of. The lifestyle at Liberty compared to Miami was vapid. There was nothing to do since nothing was near. Stores were miles away and malls were nowhere to be seen or found.Neighbors were also far apart since people owned acres of land to grow crops or just to have to themselves. Club and lounges were also never heard of since not many people partied or went out to have a good time. Libe rty was also a dry county. For instance, on Sundays, they werent permitted to hunt or purchase liquor from the stores or gas stations because Sundays are considered to be holy days. Even though it was recreationful and quiet, on the other hand, Miami was always awake with its beautiful beaches and party activities.Stores and malls are just around the corner and they vary. Clubs and lounges are always up to(p) even on Sundays and are found anywhere in Miami if anybody wants to have a great time. Miami lifestyle is just amazing and never can get boring and lame. I can always find something to do and somewhere to go to be with friends or even with the family. Even though visiting Liberty was nice, theres no doubt that Miami is the greatest place to live in or visit if youre from another country or state. The weather, people, and lifestyle are far from being alike, but not every state or country is the same. I liked Liberty, but Miami is the place I love as the weather is amazing, the people are respectful, and the lifestyle is full of entertainment. Miami is definitely a great place to have a fun time, but if you want to be in peace and independent then maybe you want to visit Liberty. I would definitely think twice about going to Liberty again. Miami is the place I sooner be at and never would leave again unless another city is the same.

We didnt notice for a long time that we were changing almost petrifying. I suppose the Volturi did us one favor when they burned our castles. Stefan and I, at least, did not hold back to petrify. Now the Volturis eyes are filmed with dusty scum, but ours are b right. I call back that will give us an advantage when we gouge theirs from their sockets.I tried to keep Renesmee away from them after that. How long do we get to hang out with Charlie? Jacob asked, interrupting my surveys. He was visibly relaxing as we pulled away from the house and all its new inmates. It made me happy that I didnt sincerely count as a vampire to him. I was still just Bella. For quite a epoch, actually. The tone of my voice caught his attention. Is something going on here besides visiting your dad?Jake, you know how youre pretty good at controlling your thoughts around Edward? He raised one thick black brow. Yeah?I just nodded, cutting my eyes to Renesmee. She was looking out the window, and I couldnt regularise how interested she was in our conversation, but I decided not to risk going any further.Jacob waited for me to add something else, and then his lower lip pushed out while he thought about what littleId said.As we drove in silence, I squinted through the a nnoying contacts into the cold rain it wasnt quite cold enough for snow. My eyes were not as ghoulish as they had been in the beginning definitely closer to a dull reddish orange than to bright crimson. Soon theyd be chromatic enough for me to quit the contacts, i hoped the change wouldnt upset Charlie too a good deal.Jacob was still plug over our truncated conversation when we got to Charlies. We didnt talk as we walked at a quick human pace through the falling rain. My dad was waiting for us he had the door open before I could knock.Hey, guys It seems manage its been age Look at you, Nessie Come to Grampa I swear youve grown half a foot. And you look skinny, Ness. He glared at me. Arent they feeding you up there? Its just the growth spurt, I muttered. Hey, Sue, I called over his shoulder. The smell of chicken, tomato, garlic, and cheese issued from the kitchen it plausibly smelled good to everyone else. I could also smell fresh pine and packing dust.Renesmee flashed her dimp les. She neer spoke in front of Charlie.Well, come on in out of the cold, kids. Wheres my son-in-law?Entertaining friends, Jacob said, and then snorted. Youre so lucky youre out of the loop, Charlie. Thats all Im going to say.I punched Jacob lightly in the kidney while Charlie cringed.Ow, Jacob complained infra his breath well, Id thought Id punched lightly.Actually, Charlie, I have some errands to run.Jacob shot a glance at me but said nothing.Behind on your Christmas shopping, Bells? You only have a few days, you know.Yeah, Christmas shopping, I said lamely. That explained the packing dust. Charlie moldiness have put the old decorations up.Dont worry, Nessie, he utter in her ear. I got you covered if your mom drops the ball.I rolled my eyes at him, but in truth, I hadnt thought about the holidays at all.Lunchs on the table, Sue called from the kitchen. Cmon, guys.See you later, Dad, I said, and exchanged a quick look with Jacob. Even if he couldnt help but think about this nea r Edward, at least there wasnt much for him to share. He had no idea what I was up to.Of course, I thought to myself as I got into the car, it wasnt like I had much idea, either. The roads were slick and dark, but driving didnt intimidate me anymore. My reflexes were well up to the job, and I barely paid attention to the road. The problem was keeping my speed from attracting attention when I had company. I wanted to be done with todays mission, to have the mystery sorted out so that I could get back to the vital confinement of learning. Learning to protect some, learning to kill others.I was getting better and better with my shield. Kate didnt pure tone the need to motivate me anymore it wasnt hard to find reasons to feel angry, now that I knew that was the key and so I in general worked with Zafrina. She waspleased with my extension I was able to cover almost a ten-foot area for more than a minute, though it exhausted me. This morning shed been trying to find out if I could pus h the shield away from my mind altogether. I didnt see what the use of that would be, but Zafrina thought it would help strengthen me, like exercising muscles in the stomach and back rather than just the arms. Eventually, you could lift more weight when all the muscles were stronger.I wasnt very good at it. I had only gotten one glimpse of the jungle river she was trying to show me.But there were different ship canal to prepare for what was coming, and with only two weeks left, I worried that I energy be neglecting the most important. Today I would rectify that oversight.Id memorized the appropriate maps, and I had no problem finding my way to the address that didnt exist online, the one for J. Jenks. My next step would be Jason Jenks at the other address, the one Alice had not given me.To say that it wasnt a nice neighborhood would be an understatement. The most nondescript of all the Cullens cars was still outrageous on this street. My old Chevy would have looked healthy here. Du ring my human years, I would have locked the doors and driven away as fast as I dared. As it was, I was a little fascinated. I tried to imagine Alice in this place for any reason, and failed. The buildings all three stories, all narrow, all leaning slightly as if bowed by the pounding rain were mostly old houses divided up into multiple apartments. It was hard to tell what color the peeling paint was supposed to be. Everything had faded to shades of gray. A few of the buildings had businesses on the first floor a dirty bar with the windows painted black, a psychics supply store with neon hands and tarot cards glowing fitfully on the door, a tattoo parlor, and a daycare with duct tape holding the broken front window together. There were no lamps on inner any of the rooms, though it was grim enough outside that the humans should have needed the light. I could hear the low mumbling of voices in the distance it sounded like TV.There were a few people about, two shuffling through the r ain in opposite directions and one sitting on the shallow porch of a boarded-up cut-rate law office, reading a wet newspaper and whistling. The sound was much too cheerful for the setting.I was so bemused by the carefree whistler, I didnt realize at first that the abandoned building was right where the address I was looking for should exist. There were no numbers on the ramshackle place, but the tattoo parlor beside it was just two numbers off.I pulled up to the curb and idled for a second. I was getting into that dump one way or other, but how to do so without the whistler noticing me? I could park the next street over and come through the back. There capability be more witnesses on that side. Maybe the rooftops? Was it dark enough for that kind of thing?Hey, lady, the whistler called to me.I rolled the passenger window down as if I couldnt hear him.The man laid his paper aside, and his clothes surprised me, now that I could see them. Under his long ragged duster, he was a litt le too well dressed. There was no breeze to give me the scent, but the sheen on his dark red shirt looked like silk. His wavy black hair was tangled and wild, but his dark skin was smooth and perfect, his teeth white and straight. A contradiction.Maybe you shouldnt park that car there, lady, he said. It might not be here when you get back. Thanks for the warning, I said.I shut off the engine and got out. Perhaps my whistling friend could give me the answers I needed faster than breaking and entering. I opened my big gray umbrella not that I cared, really, about protecting the long cashmere sweater-dress I wore. It was what a human would do.The man squinted through the rain at my face, and then his eyes widened. He swallowed, and I heard his heart accelerate as I approached.Tm looking for someone, I began.Im someone, he offered with a smile. What can I do for you, beautiful? Are you J. Jenks? I asked.Oh, he said, and his expression changed from anticipation to understanding. He got t o his feet and examined me with contract eyes. Whyre you looking for J?Thats my business. Besides, I didnt have a clue. Are you J?No.We faced each other for a long moment while his sharp eyes ran up and down the fitted pearl gray sheath I wore. His gaze finally made it to my face. You dont look like the usual customer.Im probably not the usual, I admitted. But I do need to see him as soon as possible.Im not sure what to do, he admitted. Why dont you tell me your name?He grinned. Max.Nice to meet you, Max. Now, why dont you tell me what you do for the usual? His grin became a frown. Well, Js usual clients dont look a thing like you. Your kind doesnt bother with the downtown office. You just go straight up to his fancy office in the skyscraper.I repeated the other address I had, making the list of numbers a question.Yeah, thats the place, he said, suspicious again. How come you didnt go there? This was the address I was given by a very dependable source. If you were up to any good, you wouldnt be here.I pursed my lips. Id never been much good at bluffing, but Alice hadnt left me a lot of alternatives. Maybe Im not up to any good.Maxs face turned apologetic. Look, lady Bella.Right. Bella. See, I need this job. J pays me pretty good to mostly just hang out here all day. I want to help you, I do, but and of course Tm speaking hypothetically, right? Or off the record, or whatever whole shebang for you but if I pass somebody through that could get him in trouble, Im out of work. Do you see my problem?I thought for a minute, chewing on my lip. Youve never seen anyone like me here before? Well, sort of like me.My sis is a lot shorter than me, and she has dark spiky black hair.J knows your sister?I think so.Max pondered this fora moment.I smiled at him, and his breathing stuttered.Tell you what Ill do.HI give Ja call and describe you to him. Let him make the decision. What did J. Jenks know? Would my description mean something to him? That was a troubling thought. My l ast name is Cullen, I told Max, wondering if that was too much information. I was starting to get irritated with Alice. Did I really have to be quite this blind? She could have given me one or two more words.Cullen, got it.I watched as he dialed, easily picking out the number. Well, I could call J. Jenks myself if this didnt work.HeyJ, its Max. I know Im never supposed tocall you at this number except in an emergency___Is there an emergency?1 heard faintly from the other end.Well, notexactly. Its this girl who wants to see you___fail to see the emergency in that Why didnt you follow normal bit?I didnt follow normal procedure cause she dont look like any kind of normal Is she a badge? No You cant be sure about that. Does she look like one ofKubarevs ?No let me talk, okay? She says you know her sister or something. Not likely. What does she look like? She looks like . . . His eyes ran from my face to my shoes appreciatively. Well, she looks like a freaking supermodel, thats what she looks like. I smiled and he winked at me, then went on. Rocking body, scout as a sheet, dark brown hair almost to her waist, needs a good nights sleep any of this soundingfamiliar? No, it doesnt Im not happy that you let your weakness for pretty women interrupt Yeah,so Ima sucker for the pretty ones, whats wrong with that? Im sorry I bothered you, man. Just forget it.Name, I whispered.Oh right. Wait, Max said. She says her name is Bella Cullen. That help? There was a beat of dead silence, and then the voice on the other end was abruptly screaming, using a lot of words you didnt often hear outside of truck stops. Maxs whole expression changed all the joking vanished and his lips went pale.Because you didnt ask Max yelled back, panicked. There was another pause while J collected himself.Beautiful and pale?J asked, a tiny bit calmer.I said that, didnt I?Beautiful and pale? What did this man know about vampires? Was he one of us himself? I wasnt prepared forthat kind of confrontation. I gritted my teeth. What had Alice gotten me into?Max waited for a minute through another volley of shouted insults and instructions and then glanced at me with eyes that were almost frightened. But you only meet downtown clients on Thursdays okay, okay On it.7He slid his send for shut.He wants to see me? I asked brightly.Max glowered. You could have told me you were a priority client7I didnt know I was.I thought you might be a cop, he admitted. I mean, you dont look like a cop. But you act kind of weird, beautiful.I shrugged.Drug cartel? he guessed.Who, me? I asked.Yeah. Or your boyfriend or whatever.Nope, sorry. Im not really a fan of drugs, and neither is my husband. Just say no and all that.Max cussed under his breath. Married. Cant catch a break.I smiled.Mafia?Nope.Diamondsmuggling?Please Is that the kind of people you usually deal with, Max? Maybe you need a new job.I had to admit, I was enjoying myself a little. I hadnt interacted with humans much besides Charlie and Sue. It was entertaining to watch him flounder. I was also pleased at how easy it was not to kill him.Youve got to be involved in something big. And bad, he mused. Its not really like that.Thats what they all say. But who else needs papers? Or can afford to pay Js prices for them, I should say. None of my business, anyway, he said, and then muttered the word married again. He gave me an entirely new address with basic directions, and then watched me drive away with suspicious, sorry eyes.At this point, I was ready for almost anything some kind of James Bond villains high-tech lair seemed appropriate. So I thought Max must have given me the wrong address as a test. Or maybe the lair was subterranean, underneath this very commonplace strip mall cuddle up against a wooded hill in a nice family neighborhood.I pulled into an open spot and looked up at a tastefully perspicacious sign that read JASON SCOTT, ATTORNEY AT LAW.The office inside was beige with celery green accents, inoffensive and u nremarkable. There was no scent of vampire here, and that helped me relax. nil but unfamiliar human. A fish tank was set into the wall, and a blandlypretty blond receptionist sat behind the desk.Hello, she greeted me. How can I help you?Im here to see Mr. Scott.Do you have an appointment? Not exactly. She smirked a little. It could be a while, then. Why dont you have a seat while I Aprila mans demanding voice squawked from the phone on her desk. Im expecting a Ms. Cullen shortly.I smiled and pointed to myself.Send her in immediately. Do you understand? I dont care what its interrupting.I could hear something else in his voice besides impatience. Stress. Nerves.Shes just arrived, April said as soon as she could speak. What? Send her in What are you waiting for?Right away, Mr. Scott She got to her feet, fluttering her hands as she led the way down a short hallway, offering me coffee or tea or anything else I might have wanted. Here you are, she said as she ushered me through the door in to a power office, complete with heavy wooden desk and vanity wall.Close the door behind you, a raspy high voice ordered.I examined the man behind the desk while April made a hasty retreat. He was short and balding, probably around fifty-five, with a paunch. He wore a red silk tie with a blue-and-white-striped shirt, and his navy blazer hung over the back of his chair. He was also trembling, blanched to a sickly paste color, with sweat beading on his forehead I imagined an ulcer churning away under the spare tire.J recovered himself and rose unsteadily from his chair. He reached his hand crosswise the desk.Ms. Cullen. What an absolute delight.I crossed to him and shook his hand quickly once. He cringed slightly at my cold skin but did not seem curiously surprised by it.Mr. Jenks. Or do you prefer Scott? He winced again. Whatever you wish, of course. How about you call me Bella, and HI call you J?Like old friends, he agreed, mopping a silk handkerchief across his forehead. He gestur ed for me to have a seat and took his own. I must ask, am I finally meeting Mr. Jaspers winning wife?I weighed that for a second. So this man knew Jasper, not Alice. Knew him, and seemed afraid of him, too. His sister-in-law, actually. He pursed his lips, as if he were grasping for meanings just as desperately as I was.I trust Mr. Jasper is in good health? he asked carefully.Im sure he is in excellent health. Hes on an extended vacation at the moment. This seemed to clear up some of Js confusion. He nodded to himself and templed his fingers. Just so. You should have come to the main office. My assistants there would have put you straight through to me no need to go through less hospitable channels.I just nodded. I wasnt sure why Alice had given me the ghetto address.Ah, well, youre here now. What can I do for you?Tapers, I said, trying to make my voice sound like I knew what I was talking about.Certainly, J agreed at once. Are we talking birth certificates, finale certificates, dr ivers licenses, passports, social security cards ?I took a deep breath and smiled. I owed Max big time. And then my smile faded. Alice had sent me here for a reason, and I was sure it was to protect Renesmee. Her last gift to me. The one thing she would know I needed. The only reason Renesmee would need a forger was if she was running. And the only reason Renesmee would be running was if we had lost.If Edward and I were running with her, she wouldnt need these documents right away. I was sure IDs were something Edward knew how to get his hands on or make himself, and I was sure he knew ways to escape without them. We could run with her for thousands of miles. We could swim with her across an ocean. If we were around to save her.And all the secrecy to keep this out of Edwards head. Because there was a good chance that everything he knew, Aro would know. If we lost, Aro would certainly get the information he craved before he destroyed Edward. It was as I had suspected. We couldnt win. But we must have a good shot at killing Demetri before we lost, giving Renesmee the chance to run.My still heart felt like a boulder in my chest a crushing weight. All my hope faded like fog in the sunshine. My eyes pricked.Who would I put this on? Charlie? But he was so defenselessly human. And how would I get Renesmee to him? He was not going to be anywhere close to that fight. So that left one person. There really had never been anyone else.Id thought this through so quickly that J didnt notice my pause. Two birth certificates, two passports, one drivers license, I said in a low, strained tone.If he noticed the change in my expression, he pretended otherwise. The names?Jacob Wolfe. And Vanessa Wolfe. Nessie seemed like an okay nickname for Vanessa. Jacob would get a resign out of the Wolfe thing. His pen scratched swiftly across a legal pad. Middle names?Just put something generic in.If you prefer. Ages?Twenty-seven for the man, five for the girl. Jacob could pull it off. He was a b east. And at the rate Renesmee was growing, Id better estimate high. He could be her stepfather.Ill need pictures if you prefer finished documents, J said, interrupting my thoughts. Mr. Jasper usually liked to finish them himself.Well, that explained why J didnt know what Alice looked like.Hold on, I said. This was luck. I had several family pictures shoved in my wallet, and the perfect one Jacob holding Renesmee on the front porch steps was only a month old. Alice had given it to me just a few days before Oh. Maybe there wasnt that much luck involved after all. Alice knew I had this picture. Maybe shed even had some dim flash that I would need it before she gave it to me.Here you go.J examined the picture for a moment. Your daughter is very like you.I tensed. Shes more like her father.Who is not this man. He touched Jacobs face.My eyes narrowed, and new sweat beads popped out on Js shiny head.No. That is a very close friend of the family.Forgive me, he mumbled, and the pen began s cratching again. How soon will you need the documents? Can I get them in a week?Thats a rush order. It will cost twice as but forgive me. I forgot with whom I was speaking.Clearly, he knew Jasper.Just give me a number. He seemed hesitant to say it aloud, though I was sure, having dealt with Jasper, he must have known that price wasnt really an object. Not even taking into consideration the bloated accounts that existed all over the world with the Cullens various names on them, there was enough cash stashed all over the house to keep a small region afloat for a decade it reminded me of the way there were always a hundred fishhooks in the back of any drawer at Charlies house. I doubted anyone would even notice the small stack Id removed in preparation for today.J wrote the price down on the bottom of the legal pad.I nodded calmly. I had more than that with me. I unclasped my bag again and counted out the right amount I had it all paper-clipped into five-thousand-dollar increments, so it took no time at all.There.Ah, Bella, you dont really have to give me the entire sum now. Its customary for you to save half to ensure delivery.I smiled wanly at the nervous man. But I trust you, J. Besides, Ill give you a bonus the same again when I get the documents.Thats not necessary, I assure you.Dont worry about it. It wasnt like I could take it with me. So HI meet you here next week at the same time?He gave me a pained look. Actually, I prefer to make such proceeding in places unrelated to my various businesses.Of course. Im sure Im not doing this the way you expect.Im used to having no expectations when it comes to the Cullen family. He grimaced and then quickly composed his face again. Shall we meet at eight oclock a week from tonight at The Pacifico? Its on Union Lake, and the food is exquisite.Perfect. Not that I would be joining him for dinner. He actually wouldnt like it much if I did.I rose and shook his hand again. This time he didnt flinch. But he did seem to hav e some new worry on his mind. His mouth was pinched up, his back tense. Will you have trouble with that deadline? I asked. What? He looked up, taken off guard by my question. The deadline? Oh, no. No worries at all. I will certainly have your documents done on time.It would have been nice to have Edward here, so that I would know what Js real worries were. I sighed. Keeping secrets from Edward was bad enough having to be away from him was almost too much. Then HI see you in one week.

Alternatively in the last four lines of the octet he negotiation about how humanss are robbed of their sensitivity to the beauty of what is left in nature, people have become unaware of the wonders of the world around them. The sestets shifts In argument again, even though humans do not realize It, nature continuously offers the dominance of power and re-blurt. Hopkins Is In awe of the beauty of Gods presence all around him. Hopkins uses a metaphor of Gods grandeur as an electric force. This suggests an undercurrent that is not al ship bearing seen, but which builds up as a tension r pressure that occasionally flashes out in ways that can be both brilliant and dangerous. In this moment Hopkins is amazed at how rich and full of life God can make him, Hopkins emotions peak at a high at this point in time.Hopkins uses repartition of the word trod and triple rhyming words have trod, have trod, have trod, all is scorch with trade blared and smeared with toil to emphasis the essay of humans, continuous Journey, they have been on a journey for so long that they cant see God clearly anymore, and the use of the word smeared is to exaggerate he same thing again, the screen between God and humans is getting murky and dirty, not easy to see through, so they are losing contact.. Hopkins is disappointed that humans have destroyed the land by building factories.Seeing this makes that man does not recognize His power and the beauty of nature . The soil is bare now, nor foot can feel, being shod. This may mean that because humans are wearing shoes we are disconnected to nature, and we cannot feel Gods presence because we have a barrier between us and the earth. Humans have been cutting down trees and ruining the humans for centuries, we have made the soil bare. Once Hopkins realizes that humans have pauseped being one with nature, it made him almost annoyed that we can Just ignore Gods presence.Hopkins spirits ar e finally lifted again when he notices that there will unendingly be the promise of re-birth, new life and dearest trinket. In the last four lines of the sestets Hopkins employs imagery from nature to convey rejuvenation by saying . break lights off the black West went Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs. Ah Bright wings meaning that even though the sun goes down in the west he knows that God will bring it back up in the East, he as faith that God will keep the Earth live long enough that a similar cycle will happen with nature that things will go back to how they were, fresh and rejuvenated. Also, Hopkins believes that eventually if God keep the Earth turning someone will eventually notice the beauty and wonder that Gods presence makes. In this meter Hopkins is on an emotional Journey, he first starts by being amazed at Gods presence, then his emotions change to almost angry at how human can be so ignorant, then when he realizes that God will always be there his emotions transform to astonishment at Gods persistence. WSDL it matter that he was astonished at the end of the poem, if you didnt know how what occurred to redder him this way?The second text that I will be discussing is l wake and feel the fell of dark, not day, this is a terrible sonnet by Gerald Manley Hopkins this poem, is an emotional Journey also. In this poem Hopkins is suffering from insomnia, he longs for the brightness of the day time. The darkness of night makes Hopkins feel claustrophobic, the poem emphasis his feelings of loneliness and isolation. The sonnet finishes with the quilt of snooze, while it opens with its impossibility. Hopkins starts this poem by stating that he wake up expecting day light, but un rose-cheekedly he is still stuck in the fall of darkness. The clever use of fell of dark, relates back to the fall of rapture and Eve, or how the Lucifer (the devil) is a fallen angel. Hopkins is trying to get across the meaning that darkness is brutish or the equivalent to Lucifer, compared to the brightness of daylight. Hopkins is exhausted and he feels as though the night time is endless But where I say Hours I mean years, mean life. The last four lines of the octet describe how Hopkins is wondering where God really is, Eke dead letters, to dearest him that lives alas Away. Hopkins has been trying to get a response from God for all the hours of the night, but he feels like pleading with God for sleep is pointless. He thinks that God is Just ignoring him. The first line of the sestets has a metaphor l am gall, I am heartburn. Hopkins is now feeling so terrible that is feels like he is the disturb the darkness is so everywherewhelming that he feels that he himself has become the insomnia. The lost are like this. As I am mine, their sweating selves but worse Hopkins now feels like he can look how the lost (damned) feel, hat they too are trapped in never ending darkness.Hopkins emotional Journey in this poem moves from a pleading stat e with God, through self-pity then to an his suffering of insomnia, but disappointed with himself for being so. amid the two poems Hopkins emotions change of emotions from the Joyfulness of Gods Grandeur to the despair of l wake and feel the fell of dark, not day is a journey in itself. Hopkins must have experienced a pivotal moment in his life for his emotions to change so dramatically. Reign Over Me written and directed by Mike Binder has a very powerful inner journey (both mental and emotional). It is the tarradiddle of a man named Charlie and his defend to deal with the loss of his family in the tragedy of 9/1 1, Charlie suffers from Postgraduates Stress Disorder (PETS) and is helped through the struggle by his former college roommate Alan. In the movie, Charlie starts off weaving through the traffic on this motorists scooter, stand for that he is in his own world. Charlie is stuck in a loop the whole way through the movie, every day is a struggle to Just get up out of bed. He lost his family and he is constantly trying to shut that out, he pretends he doesnt remember any of that pivotal moment in time. He Just shut down.Quit work. He stopped wanting to talk about her. Then he acted like he didnt remember them. Then he pretended like he didnt remember us. Charlies in-laws are constantly trying to talk to him, while Charlie is Just trying to forget. He is in a state of denial for most of the movie, until Alan gets him to talk to someone. First he tries a therapist, but Charlie refuses to talk. Eventually Charlie confides in Alan and tells him the story of how he lost his whole world .. And I felt them burning. This is the beginning of a new Journey for Charlie he has finally realized that he must member them to enable himself to move on.Charlies emotions peak at amazing highs and drop so low at times that he doesnt know if he can live with the pain of losing his family, but with the help of his in-laws and his friend Alan, Charlies journey has gotten ba ck on a more stable path. What Charlie went through, made his mind and soul so ditensenessed that his Journey to recovery will never end, it will be a constant struggle to stay on the stable path. So this particular(a) utilization of Journey has no arrival, but the process of his emotional peaks and falls has made his Journey a lot ore important than where he will end up.Again, does a life Journey ever really end? Will Charlie ever arrive at a point where is can Just stop? No, he must always continue The final text in a visual representation of a Journey, in the middle of the frame you are looking at a set of stairs (outside) leading up to darkness with a caption above reading Life is a Journey-EnJoy the Journey. The stairs in the visual are not perfect or straight, they are rough and uneven. This is a figure meaning that life may not be easy it will have parts that are unstable and scary. Also, the steps are leading up to rankness, this represents that we do not know where life will lead us, and it is unknown. If we knew where we were going what would be the point of the Journey? Why wouldnt we Just Jump around the hard parts and go straight to our destination? No one knows where life will take us each decision has a breach path leading us to another choice. It doesnt matter where we end up if there was no story of how we the place where we are standing at a sealed moment in time is lit up, we can however see so far ahead of us. Once that light ends it is unrevealed where the path will lead. The caption above the image reads Life is a Journey-EnJoy the Journey. A life Journey has multiple inner Journeys each inner Journey is important and significant. in that location would be no point to the Journey if we didnt not enjoy each moment. Enjoy life it is the only real Journey we ever undertake. Each inner Journey is experience differently by the main subject of the individual texts. In both of Hopkins poems he experiences two vastly opposing emotional states. sensation is admiration for Gods presence, while the other is disappointment at how God can Just ignore Hopkins suffering.Neither one of his poems bring him to any kind of conclusion, therefore his Journey continues and does not arrive anywhere. In Reign Over Me Charlies grief moves through the seven spots but does not conclude. He will always grieve but is stable enough for his life Journey to continue. Like Hopkins, Charlies Journey is not over when our involvement is over. In the visual representation we cannot see the end of the path so the only option is to persist up the steps, even though it is scary and unknown still the Journey continues. So what is the arrival without each separate step of the Journey?JourneyEach persons life is a journey on a contorted way dotted with bumps and craters. At certain points, the bumps could seem as high as mountains and the pits as deep as hell, making this journey called life appear quite despondent. Although occasionally, your p redicaments are just fates blunders, but per demote, they are your own. Your personal characteristics roughly resemble a steering cps for your journey. They could be incontrovertible peculiaritys, which could steer you on a more decent path or minus traits, which could steer you to a path thats, well not so decent.Although you have no control over fate, you have power over your own control skills, and could thus widen or narrow your chance for a smooth, prosperous journey. Also, it is beneficial to remember that you are not alone, for there are many other roads that coincide with yours, where others are conducting through their own journeys and floundering through their own bumps and craters as well. Drive together, and you could purvey support and encouragement for one another, and thus institute milder paths for all of you. Most prominently, no matter how harsh the terrain of your road becomes, just remember that you will pull through and be transformed for the better becaus e of it. This optimistic philosophy that Ive adopted had been lots solace to me in my own journey in becoming a triple-crown high school student. It was not at all easy. Although fate has been overall lenient to me, it was my driving skills that tended to direct my course towards huge bumps. Despite my awareness of my own flaws and omissions, I still compulsorily reproached others and sought-after(a) ways to exonerate myself. This was one of the worst traits I retain. It precluded me from obtaining responsibility for my choices and learning from past oversights, thus hinder my maturing process. For example, my projects were oftentimes undone till the last minute (including this one). I would think to myself, I dont feel like doing it today, so Ill work on it tomorrow. Thus the project was delay further and further until there was no tomorrow for it anymore, and then I would end up work well over midnight while secretly scowling at the teacher for giving out such a tedious and in ane assignment.Immaturity and refusal to admit my errors caused me to plunge into countless pits in my journey. The one positive trait that had proved to be highly efficient in boosting me out of these pits is dreaming. I know that too such(prenominal) of it could corrupt a person, but so far it had only empowered my spirit with much-needed optimism. My greatest ambition is to become a renowned novelist therefore every hardship and pain to me befits an inspiration for a potential novel. It is a most optimistic perception of things, and it had succoured me through many phases of emotional turmoil.Although my own choices and personal characteristics had prompted many of my dilemmas, a certain number of large bumps on this road did bluntly materialise without my causing them. An example of that would be my kindergarten teacher. Back then, I was excessively shy and timid. (I still am, but not as much). I mainly kept to myself and was far too apprehensive to participate in class activi ties. Consequently, I tycoon have appeared to be rather slow or mentally challenged. That was exactly what my teacher assumed. She would openly criticize me as a retarded child in front of myself and all my peers, and I was at that stage in my life of accrediting whatever adults told me. Thus for a long time, I subconsciously retained the economic crisis that I was somehow less than other kids. The lack of self-esteem had often induced me to fail in advance I even try. The other major obstacle that Ive contended with was during my first years in the States. I had moved to Philadelphia, PA at the age of nine with primitive English comprehension. In addition, we were coerced to dwell in one of the most delinquent and precarious districts in West Philadelphia due to our low budgets. The despicable socio-economic status of my neck of the woods could be seen from the school I attended, which had metal detectors installed at its doors. I underwent a great deal stress both academically and socially due to problems of communication. Plus there were a number of students that discriminated against me because I had the lightest shin colour in my school. As a result, I developed paranoia towards my peers, which ensues me even now.Nevertheless, everybody undergoes their own adversities, shed their own tears, and abide their own pains. At these times of needs, friends, family, and other favourable resources are to be treasured more highly. I was never alone on this road, for many other roads that coincided with mine have brought much joie de vivre upon my journey. One of which who was always there behind me was my dad. I am not abashed to say that he is my best friend. There was a period in my childhood when he was not there for me. However, he made up for it by being the best father one could have. Not only did he did take the time to assist me with my homework when needed and spent plenty of quality time with me, he was always there with wisdom, encouragement, and cons olation. The other momentous source of benefit is Canada. Moving across the Atlantic Ocean was doubtlessly the best thing that ever happened to me. The reason is that the education system in China is not only relentlessly harsh it is sadistically cruel. Society has deemed that if you failed to attain a university degree, youd be a disgrace. Your career and matrimonial opportunities would be despicably downtrodden. In addition, China possesses an enormous population and too few universities to match, thus eliciting nervous breakdowns among many high school students, some were even impelled to commit suicide due to the immense pressure. I, on the other hand, am indescribably glad to be here in Canada, where I am much more likely to do well in high school and thus hold a promising future. Now here I am in grade 10 with a tolerable grade average and a healthy attitude towards school and life in general. Although this journey had been herculean and even toilsome at times, I pulled thro ugh.One of the merits that I have acquired from my past experiences is strength. (Im not referring to muscles, of which I have none). Strength in mind and spirit is like steel, and the most sublime of its quality can only be heated through suffering. I do not mean to pity myself, but I do believe that Ive suffered more than many other teenagers have. There are certain things that I have not mentioned in this assignment, deeper pits in the hidden trails of my memory. Nonetheless, each time I fall, I was obliged to obtain strength in order to rise. Thus each time I rose, I was a little stronger than before. My kindergarten teachers abuse, for example, had brought me much self-loathing, but not anymore. Whats left is a searing bid within me to spite her by proving her wrong. Another lesson that Ive learned through my journey up to this point is to appreciate all that life has to offer. Life is short, and my road could abruptly come to a halt at anytime. Thus it is prominent to savour e ach and every moment of it by focusing on the positive things. My struggles and desolation have procured me to value what I have in order to overcome depression. My family, friends, and other fortunate events in my life have been lights in times of darkness, reminding me that the world is not completely forlorn and bleak. Optimism, along with strength, is all that I need to carry on. And thus I go forth on this journey with the memories of all the people and places Ive left behind. I know that as long as I possess a goal, I will never be lost. My goal as a successful high school student had been so far adequately accomplished, however, as always, there is much room for enhancement. It had been a most arduous but rewarding journey. My friends and family, especially my father, had made this journey much easier. Also, I would not overlook Canada, which is such an enlightening and lenient learning environment. All of these allies and resources have presented me with charge in the right c ourse. However, some of my personal characteristics, like irresponsibility, were inclined to steer me astray. Then again, other traits that I possess, like ambition, succoured me in the continuance of my journey. The bumps and craters that Ive met along my journey held a large role in constituting the person that I am now.I have fallen so many times into the seemingly abysm of despair and struggled against the mirror for just a speck of self-esteem, but I have survived. I understand that there will be greater obstacles and barriers in the future, but I personally believe that pain is a thing to be prized. Someone who does not know pain would not appreciate joy, nor would he obtain the strength to make his journey worthwhile. Finding “Love In L.A.” Essay

Stuck in traffic on the Hollywood freeway cardinal morning, a happy-go-lucky guy named Jake gets into an accident amidst nursing a fantastic dream about owning a better machine than his beat up 58 Buick. After surveying the dam board on his car and the absence of it, Jake sees an probability once he meets the victim of his traffic flight of consider. He unleashes his charms and proceeds to woo his victim, a Venezuelan immigrant named Marianna, by asking her name and number, and by trying to convince her not to let the authorities slam what happened. However, all his attempts fail as Marianna keeps shifting the focus back to the problem at hand. When finally confronted with the good for the damages, Jake decides to lie his way out by giving false information regarding his identity and car insurance. disdain these, he pursued Marianna by claiming to be both(prenominal) a musician and an actor. After the so-called outcome to the problem, Marianna seems to warm up to Jake and fi nally relents in giving her number. As they part ways, Jake notices that Marianna jots down his license weighing machines, qualification sure that he would be traced. However, Jake has the last laugh as it is revealed that his license cases were just stolen from an old junk. The tale ends with the sly fox gloating on his escape and slipping back into an other fantasy. Love in L. A. is a baloney about adore, or the lack of it. Readers of the story are led to believe that it is a story of two star-crossed lovers, a carefree guy and a stable, ripe girl, meeting in the approximately un wantly of places such as a traffic accident on Hollywood boulevard. However, the story reveals that the romanticistic notion of finding love in unlikely places is just a fantasy, a flight of fancy not unlike the one Jake was having when he smacked into Mariannas car.L. A. is perfect as a setting for this story as it is a chorus of both the business world and cultural diversity. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, it is one of the largest and most diverse cities in the United Sates with a population of almost 10 million multicultural residents ( dry land and County Quick facts). Aside from its impressive statistics, it is excessively home to the most famous entertainment town in the world, Hollywood. It is the perfect place for a carefree character to eat a chance encounter with the prim up and proper business type. And where else but to stage it in a freeway where all walks of life are made equal by suffering the same fate, being stalled in a traffic jam. Thus, L. A. hindquarters be considered a perfect setting for star-crossed lovers meeting in a citys societal crucible, the freeway. The interaction between the characters when they meet mirrors courtship. The boy finally having a chance to talk to the pretty girl, tries to effectuate his best foot forward while the girl seems impervious to the infatuation. This encounter reveals the hidden agendas, the motives behind the charms and the fallacy of first impressions. Then, the proofreader is once again taken for a ride as it seems that the prim and proper girl melts to the charm of the easy-go-lucky guy and relents in giving him a s waitr of personal information. But this apprehend is dashed once again in the last part of the story as the masks of the two characters are stripped away to reveal their slyness and manipulation one is making sure the other leave not escape while the other gloats in his final sham. This final encounter supports the fact that the love in this story is nothing practically than a means, to be manipulated by both characters to achieve their ends. When Jake Met Marianna The door of Jake paints a picture of a carefree easy-go-lucky guy who lives detached from the set rules of life. He is presented as a man whose philosophy hinges on self-freedom rather than stability. He despises being chained to routine, as shown by his self-assertion towards the steadily employed a nd his reference to Mariannas hurrying to the office as boring. He atomic number 50 be considered a free spirit, not in a positive sense, but rather more as a bum who would rather live in fantasy than face the responsibilities of reality. Despite the age of his car, 52 years old, Jake comes off as middle-aged, around 25-30 years of age, lanky and with a scruffy chin, exhausting a shirt with a rock and roll theme, faded jeans and battered Chuck Taylors. He would have been cool if he had focused on restoring his 58 Buick rather than daydreaming about having a naked as a jaybird car. Instead, his daydreaming almost led to the loss of his present car.The traffic accident strengthens the characterization of Jake, magnifying his tendency to live in his dreams rather than face reality. He went for gasconade and charms rather than owning up fors his mistake, in the hopes of both escaping the business of paying for the damage and capturing the girl. The traffic accident was also the mean s for the reader to be introduced to Marianna, the victim of Jakes daydream. She is first introduced as affable, even smiling at Jake in their first verbal exchange. However, the conflict also reveals her true nature as she deflects all of Jakes advances to ensure that justice is served. Despite her short moving-picture show and introduction in the story, the reader can glean so oftentimes history from the way she reacted to the problem. From the thin pieces of information provided in the story, one can infer that Mariannas immigrant family have had success in their follow homeland, evidenced by the fact that her father was able to give her a car. She is an independent woman, asserting her right even in the barrage of Jakes swagger and charm. But, she can also be very manipulative. Realizing that Jake was untrustworthy, she affect to be affected by her charms so as to escape his advances. Then, when they were about to separate, she jotted down the Buicks photographic plate numbe r just in case the information received was false. Her efforts failed however as it is revealed that even the plate number was false. The last paragraphs defined both characters. They were an anti-thesis of each other right down to their cars. Jake drove a beat down yet very durable 1958 Buick while Marianna drove a brand new, import but quite flimsy car.The beat down Buick is an extension of the characterization of Jake in the sense that it had the electromotive force to be a very beautiful car if only taken care of. Its fake plate number represented the swagger of Jake, open to the public but fraudulent. Mariannas car on the other hand also mirrored her personality. It was new, imported and up to date with the advancements of the modern age. But since it was imported, much like the immigrant Marianna, it was flimsy and not up for the abuse of American freeways. withal the effect of the accident on both owners and cars were similar. Surely, Marianna will be traumatized once she fi nds out that all the information she got, down to the plate number, were fake and useless, much like her car which was dented and damaged. As for the Buick and Jake, life goes on, the potential of the car continues to be unrealized much like its owners reality warped by his fantasies. In closing, the title of the story misleads the reader into thinking that it is indeed a romantic story. Thus, it perfectly encapsulates the underlying theme of misleading. This theme propels the story from the lies and swagger of Jake to his penchant for living in daydreams to the manipulation of Marianna with Jakes infatuation of her down to the fake license plates of the Buick. Even readers will shake their heads, falling victims to the same fate as Marianna and her flimsy car. Works Cited U. S. Census Bureau. State and County Quick facts. last revised 21 April 2010.
