Dramatic Devices Essay
How Does Miller Use Dramatic Devices to Show the Impact of the Arrival of Marco and Rodolfo in this scene?à In the play ââ¬ËA view from a bridgeââ¬â¢ Miller uses many dramatic devices in many scenes. I am going to be looking at the dramatic devices miller uses to show the impact of the arrival of Marco and Rodolfo.à In the early 1950ââ¬â¢s Italy was a very poor country because the economy was very slow to grow particularly in the south which was less industrialised. This meant that many Italians left Italy for America with the help of dockyard owners who knew that they may well get cheap labour from immigrants until they had paid for their passage over to America. Once they had paid their fare, the immigrants were left to make their own way. The play is set in this time in Brooklyn where the family the play is about, Eddie, Beatrice and their niece Catherine, lives. The family are awaiting the arrival of Beatriceââ¬â¢s two cousins Marco and Rodolfo who have illegally immigrated to America to seek a better life and to earn money to send home to their familiesà Before the arrival of the two cousins the family are just living normally. Eddie and Beatrice are having a few problems with their marriage which are only made worse as the play goes on. Eddie and Catherine have a very close relationship and she looks up to him like a father. Eddie is very protective of Catherine and does not want her to get a job, wear high heel, wear short skirts or even grow up at all. He has looked out for her like a daughter since he and Beatrice took her in. However he is seeing her less and less as a niece or a daughter and more like a woman. He is starting to question his feelings for her, and the arrival of a possible new love interest for Catherine does not please Eddie. Catherine and Beatrice are quite close and Beatrice is quite like a mother figure to Catherine. In the first scenes we see that Beatrice sticks up for Catherine when Catherine wants to get a job and Eddie does not want her too. We can see there is tension in the family before the two Italians arrive but their arrival does not help the tension in the family. From the scene where Marco and Rodolfo arrive we can foresee that something is going to happen and there is going to be problems, especially between Rodolfo, Catherine and Eddie. Towards the end of the scene Rodolfo and Catherine are mostly talking to each other and Catherine seems quite smitten with Rodolfo. Especially when she finds out what a good singer he is. ââ¬Ë(enthralled) leave him finish, itââ¬â¢s beautifulââ¬â¢ Eddie sees this and dislikes the fact that Catherine is giving Rodolfo so much attention. He firstly stops Rodolfo singing ââ¬Ëlook, kid; you donââ¬â¢t want to be picked up do ya?ââ¬â¢ The reality is Rodolfo probably would not get picked up but Eddie did not want him to sing because he did not want Rodolfo to please Catherine. After he has stopped Rodolfo singing he tells Catherine to take her high heels off, this embarrasses and angers Catherine. Beatrice sees what Eddie is doing and is also angry at him for it. ââ¬ËBeatrice watches her go and gets up; in passing, she gives Eddie a cold look, restrained only by strangers, and goes to the table to pour coffeeââ¬â¢ this quotation from the stage directions tells us how Beatrice is annoyed with Eddie for putting Catherine down and also shows us how she looks out for Catherine. Rodolfo irritates Eddie again by saying ââ¬Ëespecially when they are so beautifulââ¬â¢ and indicates to Catherine. Eddie can see that something is going to happen between Catherine and Rodolfo and we can see this from the stage direction with says ââ¬Ëhis face puffed with troubleââ¬â¢ this tells us that he does not want something to happen between Catherine and Rodolfo. Marco and Rodolfo clearly have a good brotherly relationship and Marco seems to have some control over Rodolfo as he seems able to tell him what to do. From this we can see that if there was ever a problem for Rodolfo, Marco would help him and look out for him.

How do accounts of rural and suburban racism challenge understandings Essay
How do accounts of rural and suburban racism challenge understandings of race and place - Essay Example As a result, there is urgent need to come up with strategies to eliminate or at the very least, reduce cases of racist violence in rural areas. This essay aims at analyzing the various forms of racism in rural and urban areas of the UK, through the eyes of both the whites and the ethnic minorities. The essay also examines the various ways in which such forms of racism can be addressed. 2.0 Rural racism in the English countryside The idea of the English country side for most people is almost fantasy-like, where life is easy-flowing and communities are like ââ¬Å"small nationsâ⬠. According to Garland & Chakraborti (2006, pp. 161) the rural life of most communities in England is characterized by a quite, cozy life, greenery, close-knit relations among people, and deep feelings of belonging. As a result, the country side is perceived as the place where the ââ¬Å"realâ⬠England is represented. Accordingly, there is a common perception that the countryside is a very peaceful pl ace, with no cases of racial segregation and violence. On the contrary, other people coming from other towns and cities, especially ethnic minorities always find it hard to fit into the community life. These minorities are then perceived as unwilling to adopt the English culture, and are subject to racial discrimination. 3.0 Strategies for refiguring rural racism 3.1 Various forms of exclusion In the UK, exclusion can range from differences in skin colour, cultural identity, and economic status. Nonetheless, it seems that racial segregation is the most dominant form of exclusion practiced by most people in the UK today. The main racial categories include White, Black, and Asian. The White category according to Woodward (2004, pp.139) includes the British and the Irish, while the Black category is made up of people from African and Caribbean countries. The Asians are then categorized as being Chinese, Pakistani, or Indian. However, even within the ââ¬Å"Whiteâ⬠group, the Engli sh still seem to alienate the Irish and the Welsh. The English seem to have a sense of cultural hegemony, which they believe represents true British nationalism. Therefore, any other ethnic group, especially the Irish is seen as a contaminant of British national identity. The issue of authentic Englishness then comes to the fore of societal structures, and forms a basis for racial segregation. 3.2 Definitions of rurality for indigenous and ethnic minorities, differences Indigenous people and ethnic minorities have very different perception of the term ââ¬Å"ruralityâ⬠. For most whites, rurality bears the last hope for the preservation of whiteness (Garner 2007, pp.78). The countryside, should, therefore, be protected from the evils of city life, the latter which is characterized by multiculturalism and disorder, represented by ethnic minorities. Accordingly, to a majority of ethnic minorities, life in the countryside is not as smooth, since they constantly have to worry about racial abuse and violence (McKinney 2005, pp. 20). However, cases of violent assault are relatively fewer compared to reported incidents of verbal abuse. It is also alarming to note that the criminal system does not take the victimization of the ethnic minorities seriously, as the former chooses to believe in the ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠of English people (ibid). As Bonnet (2000b, pp.113 ) noted, English rural dwellers always suspect and treat ââ¬Å"

Lab7 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Lab7 - Essay Example Just as original Image A, Image C looks similar to Image C1 after the logarithmic transformation. Above are images (1) original, (2) the transformed image of (1) and (3) is the reverse transformation of image (2). The original image (1) demonstrates the Fourier transmutation. The reverse image is available to reconstruct the original image which is a replica in the pixels and luminance. The reconstruction of the original image can be done through inverse Fourier transformation as depicted in image (3). The transformation of the original image (2) has high frequency in the center image hence it is viewed as a dot. (Sandra A, 2012) Image (i) is a circle image due to incoherent noise and its respective transformation image (ii). Image (i) indicates a random and even noise spread all over while image (ii) depicts a partial noise removal from the filtered image. Image (iii) is a circle with a coherent noise that is regular in the vertical direction. The image also has a sharp edge. It transformed image (iv) indicates inexistence of lines yet there appears wave-like circles around the dot to indicate existence of soft noise. The wave-like circles disappear when we move to the outside from the dot. This indicates lack on noise at the borders of the image. In comparison to the entire four images, (ii) appears sharper than (iv). Therefore, Fourier is able to separate the noise from image in a regular noise but remove just a few in a random noise. In the figures above, (1) is an ideal lowpass filter, (2) is the original circle through a filtered spectrum with incoherent noise and (3) is an inverse transformation of (2). The final image is made better than the original image through application of lowpass filter and production of low frequency through the filtered spectrum of original image. The final image shows more details and is brighter than image (1). Hence the lowpass filter is vital for noise removal from the image for

Essay Prpposal and Annotated Bibliography Research Proposal
Essay Prpposal and Annotated Bibliography - Research Proposal Example Tom and Maggie, the main characters chose different ways to fight against past (time) but their fight become futile under the flow of time. The Novel begins with the early life of the heroine, Maggie Tulliver and ends with the death of Maggie and her brother Tom, in a flood on the river Floss. The plot of the novel is quite slow moving but it helps to have an accurate measurement of time. The river Floss itself represents time, which is endless and ever flowing. The past haunts Tulliver family with Mr. Tulliverââ¬â¢s death, family crises, bankruptcy, and loss of the Mill etc. Tom is more practical than Maggie. But Maggie wasted her intellectual aptitude in her socially isolated state and she embraced intense spirituality. The death in flood denotes the end of time and the novel. The strong bond of love between brother and sister signifies ever flowing time. The series of events in the life of Tom and Maggie force them to struggle against death, the point of no return. George Eliot points out that: (ââ¬Å"And every man and women mentioned in this history was still livingâ⬠(Eliot 591) the story of Tulliver family ends with the death of Tom and Maggie but history never ends. The ever flowing river Floss or time is represented as the force that is capable to determine the destiny of Tulliver family. So, the ways that time is measured and marked in the novel helps to connect the present state to past and future. George Eliot use time to measure the development of the story and it leads to the last conflict and doom of Tom and Maggie. The time is marked and measured and this helps the reader to have a clear idea cyclic procedure of time, i.e. nature. Moreover, time unveils the past of Tulliver family and leads the important characters to their destiny. The Journal Article by George Eliot, Theodor Storm and John T. Database Logic and Management questions Module 2 Article
Database Logic and Management questions Module 2 - Article Example However, we still need a logical design for the reason that building a physical design without logical design is similar to building a house without blueprints. In fact, the basic purpose of building a logical database design is to ensure that all the entities and their possible relationships required by the database are entirely and exactly identified and described. In view of the fact that logical database design is built using easy to understand symbol and language, hence it can be easily examined and validated as accurate by the end-users. As discussed above, this logical database design works as a guide that is to be followed by the database developers to use as a "blueprint" for developing the physical database model. In this scenario, the information provided in the logical database model is utilized to describe the relational tables, entities, stored procedures, primary and foreign keys, and triggers (Liberty University, 2013). In the past few years, the use of information systems in the healthcare industry has raised to a huge extent. In this scenario, organizing and administrating healthcare resources has turned out to be a challenge in opposition to time, for the reason that having control over the expansion of the disease is now as significant as treating it. Additionally, computerization and automation of clinical firms through information systems containing large databases offers a large number of benefits. In addition, in many researches authors have emphasized on the need to be aware of the situational aspects that force individualsââ¬â¢ comfort with receiving and distributing healthcare information in an electronic arrangement. In this scenario, one suggestion is to investigate severer rule of medical information, for instance, to make sure that stakeholders evidently recognize who they are, for what reason they will collect and distribute the data, what kind of data they will take and even to pose any limitations and restrictions

Reverse Offshoring from India Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Reverse Offshoring from India - Essay Example Outsourcing was a trend which indicated transfer of work which was of low technology and small wages to a company or a nation which provided such benefits. (Frauenheim, (2005). Today increasingly with problems of gaining H1B visas for immigration and need for developing local competencies as well as the flattening of wages in some high end category of jobs Indian IT companies have graduated to the second level of outsourcing, reverse outsourcing. (Reverse outsourcing, 2004). Thus Infosys Technologies and TCS planned to hire over 55,000 workers in 2004-2005. (Reverse outsourcing, 2004). This trend is seen to be mutually beneficial as employees in the West are increasingly absorbed by Indian IT firms. Spokesman for Infosys a leading IT consultancy firm from India confirmed this trend, attributing it to leveraging India's productivity with affordable consulting services in the United States. (Millard, 2004). Outsourcing as per Harmonize, Hostetler, Middleton (2003) is not a new practice though its conceptual development has perhaps come about after emergence of IT. IT being a core technology area, companies had over the years found it easier to outsource rather than create in house capabilities. This trend was evident in small as well as big companies. (Antonucci, 1998). Leading Indian companies as TCS and Wipro have been major beneficiaries of outsourcing over the years. As Ryans (1996) indicates, the reasons for outsourcing are obvious for businesses reaping benefits of core competence of a company or its staff and avoiding in house accretion of skills as well as manpower. The trend of reverse outsourcing emerges from the need for cutting costs as well as developing a more balanced business model which can service the customer located at different locations across the globe. This was also one of the primary basis for developing outsourcing as a concept in the initial years. (Garaventa. Tellefsen, 2001). Kelley and Jude (2005) contend that as outsourcing is a part of business the need is to focus on the process of making appropriate decisions rather than the costs of doing so. This is apparently evident in the decision of Indian IT companies adopting reverse outsourcing. The balance of costs versus savings has perhaps led these companies to conduct this highly challenging model of business where they can leverage their core competence. The emergence of reverse outsourcing as a natural form of growth in business is also evident as per Baldo (2004). Discussing the upcoming competition between China and India, Baldo (2004) contends that as India becomes more proficient in absorption of business outsourcing; the business levels at which this occurs is much bigger, thereby leading to a shift of low end work to other countries as China thus establishing the cycle of reverse outsourcing. The trend of reverse outsourcing thus implies review and return of work by IT companies in India to US firms or employees with a view to leverage advantages gained from competencies as well as cultural affinities of local population in the home country. Thus having gained huge contracts from international business deals, these companies find it convenient to reverse outsource jobs provided by Western firms to locals thereby enabling greater penetration of the local market. Andrew Jackson Essay Example for Free
Andrew Jackson Essay Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, deserves to have his picture engraved on the twenty-dollar bill. Jacksons perilous military achievement and leadership as well as democratic principles demonstrated during his presidency have made a significant contribution to American history and political life. Andrew Jackson led his troops to decisive victories against the Creeks in Alabama and against the British in New Orleans. In the war of 1812 the Creek Indians, British allies, had threatened the southwestern borders of the United States. A major general in the Tennessee militia, Jackson with the help of his troops successfully defeated the Creek Indians in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was able to overcome shortages of supplies and food. In addition, he was able to curb two potential mutinies and lead a successful campaign against the Creeks. A second major battle that brought recognition to Jackson was the Battle of New Orleans. An impressive aspect of this battle was that in spite of Jackson being greatly outnumbered with his army of 5,000 men against the British army of 8,000, Jackson was able to win with minimal casualties to his troops compared to the British who suffered greater losses. These two military triumphs earned Jackson acclaimed national military fame. After the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Jacksons men acknowledged his toughness by calling him Old Hickory because he was as tough as Hickory Wood. His stunning victory at New Orleans gave Jackson status as a national hero because he gave Americans confidence in their ability to defend their new liberty. As a strong president, Andrew Jackson led reforms for the common man and created a more balanced central government. Jackson believed that the common man should have a place in society. He governed with the principle to let the people rule. Under his leadership, he and his followers issued reforms to reduce the long workdays and allow the average man to earn a greater share of the nations wealth. Wanting economic opportunity for all men, Jackson acted on his leadership skills to protect the rights of farmers, artisans, and small shopkeepers from the selfish interests of largeà businesses and monopolies. Jackson wanted to help common Americans by letting them have a say in politics. He allowed many people to vote than ever before, therefore making the government more directly responsible to the people. He believed that the president should use full power as granted by the constitution. In that capacity, he made the most presidential vetoes than all the presidents before him. Jacksons use of the presidential veto was an effective measure to create a more balanced central government by decentralizing power in both the executive and legislative branch making them equal to each other. This set an effective standard for presidential procedure. Never hesitant, Jackson argued with the Supreme Court or Congress when their positions conflicted with the best interests of all the people. Jacksons efforts to make reforms for the common man and his ability to balance the power of the federal government made a lasting impression on American democracy. Jacksons achievements, as a military general as well as his leadership as the seventh president of the United States, give him the rightful recognition to have his image on the twenty dollar bill. As a general, Jackson was able to make quick and wise decisions to lead his troops to prevail through challenging military operations. As president, he left a lasting legacy to improve the conditions of the common man and to strengthen the office of the presidency. He shall always be remembered for granting people a greater voice in government by giving voting rights to non-land owners and replacing an aristocratic cabinet with people of more humble means. Jackson is regarded with respect for strengthening the office of the president through the use of veto, and rendering equality in power to both the executive and legislative branches. These aspects of his presidential administration have become a standard for todays modern presidency.
